Why Is the OEKO-TEX® Certificate in Children's Textiles So Important?

Why Is the OEKO-TEX® Certificate in Children's Textiles So Important?

Safety first — especially in a baby's room

A child's room is a place where little ones spend a huge part of their time — sleeping, playing, discovering the world, and cuddling their favorite cushions and blankets. Every surface, every textile, every decorative element is something they touch, breathe near, and often press their faces against. It's no surprise that parents increasingly pay attention not only to how these products look, but above all to whether they are safe for a baby's delicate skin.

The OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certificate guarantees that the materials used to make cushions, canopies, and poufs are free from harmful chemical substances. While this may sound technical, in practice it has enormous importance for your child's health — including everyday products such as a letter cushion that your child cuddles from their very first days.

In this article, we explain exactly what this certification means, why it matters more for children than for adults, and why at Betty's Home it has always been a non-negotiable standard — not a marketing badge.

What does OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 actually mean?

OEKO-TEX® is an independent certification system that has been monitoring the safety of textile products for over 30 years. It was founded in 1992 and today operates across more than 100 countries, covering thousands of manufacturers and millions of products. Products bearing this label have passed rigorous testing for more than 100 different chemical substances, including pesticides, formaldehydes, heavy metals, and carcinogenic dyes.

Standard 100 — the most widely recognized level of OEKO-TEX® certification — means that every single component of the product has been thoroughly tested. Not just the outer fabric, but the threads, fillings, zippers, buttons, and prints as well. This gives parents confidence that textiles used in their child's room, including every letter cushion, are completely safe from the inside out.

Crucially, OEKO-TEX® certification is not self-declared. It is issued by independent, accredited institutes — so when you see that label on a product, it means a third party has verified it, not just the manufacturer themselves. That independence is what makes it trustworthy.

Why is this so important for children?

The skin of infants and young children is much thinner than that of adults and far more permeable. This means that harmful substances — chemical residues in fabrics, heavy metals in dyes, pesticide traces in filling materials — can enter a child's body more easily and in higher concentrations. What would cause no reaction in an adult can trigger irritation, allergic responses, or worse in a baby.

In addition, babies and toddlers tend to cuddle, suck, and chew on cushions and blankets — which is why it is absolutely crucial that items like a letter cushion or a velvet pouf are entirely free from toxins. A child doesn't distinguish between a toy and a decorative cushion. To them, everything that's soft and within reach is fair game for hugging — and sometimes tasting.

This is especially relevant for products that stay in the room around the clock: cushions on the bed, poufs on the floor, garlands above the crib. The cumulative exposure to even low-level chemical residues in poorly certified textiles can add up over weeks and months. OEKO-TEX® certification eliminates that risk entirely.

OEKO-TEX® covers not just the fabric, but the entire product

One of the most important and often misunderstood aspects of OEKO-TEX® certification is its scope. Many people assume it only applies to the outer fabric — but that's not the case. The certificate covers every single component of the finished product.

This means that when you buy a certified corduroy letter cushion from Betty's Home, you can be sure that the velvet or corduroy fabric is tested, the thread used to sew every seam is tested, the filling inside the cushion is tested, and any additional elements — zippers, labels, decorative prints — are tested too. No corners are cut. No component is exempt.

This full-product approach is what sets OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 apart from vague claims like "natural materials" or "eco-friendly" — labels that have no standardized definition and can mean almost anything. OEKO-TEX® means something specific, measurable, and independently verified.

How does OEKO-TEX® quality control work?

Products with the OEKO-TEX® certificate undergo advanced testing in independent, accredited laboratories across Europe and beyond. These tests are comprehensive, covering a wide range of potentially harmful substances:

  • Dyes — to ensure they do not contain carcinogenic azo compounds that can break down into harmful aromatic amines on contact with skin.
  • Heavy metals — including lead, nickel, cadmium, chromium, and arsenic, all of which can accumulate in the body and cause long-term health issues.
  • Formaldehydes — volatile compounds that can irritate the respiratory system, eyes, and skin, and are sometimes used in textile finishing.
  • Pesticides and chlorophenols — residues from the agricultural or industrial processing of raw materials like cotton.
  • Substances that can cause contact allergies — including certain preservatives, flame retardants, and plasticizers.
  • pH value — to ensure the fabric is skin-neutral and won't cause irritation on sensitive skin.

Additionally, the testing criteria are regularly updated in line with the latest medical research and legal requirements. This is not a one-time inspection — manufacturers must renew their certification regularly, and new substances are added to the testing list as science advances. OEKO-TEX® today is stricter than it was ten years ago, and will be stricter still in ten years' time.

Why do we choose only certified materials at Betty's Home?

In our Polish studio, we sew letter cushions, poufs, and garlands exclusively from fabrics certified with OEKO-TEX® Standard 100. This ensures that every product placed in your child's room is fully safe — whether a letter cushion is resting under a newborn's head or being cuddled daily by a preschooler.

For us, this is an absolute standard, not a marketing add-on. We source all our fabrics — velvet, corduroy, bouclé — from verified European suppliers who hold current certifications and operate under controlled, ethical working conditions. We know where every roll of fabric comes from, and we can stand behind every product we make.

We are parents ourselves, and we know how much more peacefully you sleep knowing your child is surrounded only by tested, certified textiles. That peace of mind is something we want every family to have — not just those who know to ask about it.

It's also worth noting that choosing certified materials affects not only the child, but the people who sew the products. Working with OEKO-TEX® certified fabrics means our team in the studio is also protected from prolonged exposure to harmful substances. Safety runs through the entire chain — from the supplier to the sewer to the child sleeping with their letter cushion.

What do parents say?

"Before buying letter cushions for our son, I compared several brands. Only Betty's Home clearly stated that their products had the OEKO-TEX® certificate. That decided everything — safety was our top priority." — Natalia
"I love your bouclé and velvet — they're beautiful and incredibly soft, and knowing they're certified means I feel completely comfortable letting my daughter sleep with her bouclé letter cushion under her head every single night." — Monika
"I'd never heard of OEKO-TEX® before I started looking for cushions for our nursery. Once I understood what it meant, I couldn't imagine buying anything without it. Betty's Home was the obvious choice — certified materials, made in Europe, beautiful design. Ticked every box." — Joanna

How can you recognize certified products?

Honest brands have nothing to hide. On websites or product labels, you should clearly see the wording "OEKO-TEX® Standard 100" — along with the certification number and the name of the issuing institute. That number matters: it means you can verify the certification independently on the official OEKO-TEX® website.

You can also ask the seller directly to show the certificate number or documentation confirming the tests. Any manufacturer that truly holds OEKO-TEX® certification will be proud to share it — because it represents real investment in quality and safety. If a brand is vague, uses phrases like "eco-inspired" or "natural materials" without backing them up, treat that as a red flag.

When shopping for a letter cushion, a velvet pouf, or a star cushion for your child's room, make OEKO-TEX® certification one of your non-negotiable criteria. It takes ten seconds to check — and it can make all the difference.

Summary: your child's health and safety come first

When decorating your baby's room, you want it to be beautiful, cozy, and stylish. But above all, it must be safe — especially when it comes to textiles that have direct, prolonged contact with your child's skin and respiratory system. The two goals are not in conflict: you don't have to choose between beautiful and safe. You just need to know what to look for.

That's why it's worth choosing cushions, poufs, and garlands with the OEKO-TEX® certificate — so you can be sure they are not only lovely decorative elements, but also healthy, toxin-free essentials of everyday childhood. This includes every carefully made corduroy letter cushion, every soft bouclé letter cushion, and every velvet pouf that becomes part of your child's world.

Because the best nursery decor isn't just the most beautiful — it's the kind you never have to worry about.
