The essentials you need in your baby's first room — the complete checklist

The essentials you need in your baby's first room — the complete checklist

Why have a list like this?

Preparing a room for a newborn is a huge joy, but also quite a challenge. The moment your loved ones find out you're expecting, advice, recommendations and lists of "essential" products start pouring in from every direction — often contradicting one another. It's easy to fall into the trap of buying hundreds of little things that later turn out to be unnecessary, take up space and strain the budget before your baby even arrives.

A good, well-thought-out must-have list works like a filter: it helps you separate the things you truly need from the ones that just look pretty in photos. With it, you'll create a functional, cosy and safe space — without chaos or unnecessary spending. Just as importantly, a list like this lets you spread purchases over time and consciously decide where to save and where to invest for years to come.

Below you'll find the complete checklist — from furniture, through textiles, to the decorations that give the room its character. Everything in order, from the absolute essentials to the pieces that turn an ordinary room into a special place.

1. Cot and mattress — the centre of everything

This is where your little one will spend most of their time in the first months of life — newborns sleep up to 16–18 hours a day. Choose a solid cot with a safety certificate. It's important that the slats are closely spaced (a maximum gap of 6 cm) and that the paint covering it is non-toxic. It's also worth looking for an adjustable base height: at first you'll set it higher to comfortably lay down your sleeping newborn, and once your baby starts sitting and standing — you'll lower it for safety.

The mattress should be medium-firm and fit the cot's dimensions perfectly — your hand shouldn't fit between the mattress and the frame. Pay attention to breathability and a washable cover. Don't leave too many soft toys and cushions in the cot — in the first months this matters for safety reasons. Decorative cushions will have their moment, but their place is on a shelf or in the play corner, not in a sleeping baby's cot.

If you're planning the room for years ahead, consider a cot that "grows" with your child — models with removable slats later convert into a toddler bed.

2. A dresser with a changing table — practical and ergonomic

The changing table is the true hero of the first year — you'll use it even a dozen or more times a day. It's best placed on top of a dresser, so all the cosmetics, nappies and clothes are within reach, and once the nappy stage is over, the dresser stays with you for years to come. Make sure the height of the furniture suits your own height — your back will thank you, especially in the first weeks when your body is recovering after birth.

A practical tip: everything you need during a nappy change should be within reach of one hand — the other always stays with the baby. Containers, baskets and organisers on the top or in the upper drawer work perfectly.

3. A wardrobe or shelving unit for clothes and textiles

Even if your baby's clothes are tiny right now, they multiply quickly — just like the supplies of blankets, nappies and fitted sheets. Babies grow at lightning speed in the first year, so at least two sizes will "live" in the wardrobe side by side: the current one and the next one, waiting its turn.

A closed wardrobe will protect textiles from dust, while open shelves with baskets are perfect for everyday bits and pieces: bodysuits, socks, hats and muslin cloths. Fabric storage boxes in colours that match the rest of the room are another great solution — order can be part of the design, not its enemy.

4. A feeding chair and a night light

An armchair (or a comfortable chair with armrests) is a must-have, and not only for a breastfeeding mum. This is where you'll cuddle your baby to sleep, read the first books and soothe them at night. When choosing a chair, pay attention to the height of the armrests — that's where the arm supporting your baby rests during feeding, so poor support quickly makes itself known with wrist and neck pain.

Next to it, place a lamp with warm light — it will let you check whether your little one is sleeping peacefully without waking them with harsh overhead light. A warm, dimmed light also supports the evening wind-down ritual and helps build healthy sleep habits from the very first weeks.

If there's no room for a full-size armchair in the feeding nook, a soft pouf works beautifully as a footrest or an extra seat. The Large Bouclé Pouf Cream is stable, light and elegant enough not to look like temporary furniture — and once your child grows, it will become their favourite spot for looking at picture books.

5. A soft floor and a play corner

From the very first months, your baby will lie on their tummy, learn to lift their head, roll over and crawl. The floor very quickly becomes the main arena of development — which is why it deserves just as much care as the cot. A soft, safe surface is the place of first attempts and small victories: the first roll, the first push-up onto little hands, the first tries at sitting up.

Instead of a thin rug that slides across the floor, a floor mattress works far better. The Bouclé Floor Mattress Cream is a solution that combines the function of a play mat with beautiful decoration — soft, thick, sewn from fashionable bouclé fabric, it looks so good in the room that you won't need to hide it when guests arrive. The removable cover is washable, which is priceless with a crawling baby using it daily.

Over time, the mattress will change its role: it will become a spot for reading books, a base for building blanket forts, and even a sleepover bed in the preschool years. It's one of those purchases that truly serve for years.

Next to the mattress, it's worth placing a low, soft pouf — the Large Bouclé Pouf Mocha rounds off the play corner colour-wise and gives your little one their first "own" seat, perfect for practising sitting up under a parent's watchful eye. Two poufs in mocha and cream tones look straight out of an interiors catalogue together — and they solve the problem of seating for siblings or visiting grandparents along the way.

6. Letter cushions — a personal accent in the room

The room is ready, but something is missing — that finishing touch? Letter-shaped cushions are not just a beautiful decoration, but a keepsake for years. You can choose the initial of your baby's name, the whole name, or simply letters in colours matched to the interior. It's a decoration that grows with your child: first a soft accent above the cot, then a cuddly companion, and in the preschool years — a help in learning letters and a first step towards reading.

Go for cushions made of bouclé — the very fabric that reigns in children's interior design today. The Bouclé Letter Cushion Mocha in a warm, coffee tone fits perfectly into neutral, muted arrangements and won't feel tired after a season. If you prefer a lighter base, the Bouclé Letter Cushion Cream in a creamy shade matches literally every palette — from beiges, through powder pink, to greens.

All the letters are hand-sewn in Poland from OEKO-TEX® certified fabrics, with anti-allergenic silicone filling — and that matters, because in a baby's room everything within reach of little hands (and mouths!) should be one hundred percent safe. The cushions can be washed at 30°C and keep their fluffiness after washing.

7. Decorations that create the mood

Finally, leave space for a few soft accents that will make the room stop being merely "furnished" and start being "designed". In a baby's room, the best decorations are the ones that double as safe toys — soft, pleasant to the touch, with no hard elements.

A great example is the Bouclé Star Cushion Mocha — a fluffy star that looks like a piece from an interiors photoshoot on a shelf or in the corner of a cot, and a moment later becomes a favourite cuddly companion. The star is also a beautiful symbol: of peaceful nights and sweet dreams, which we wish every little one.

Remember the "less is more" rule: one accent for the wall, one for the shelf, one beside the cot. The space between decorations makes the ones that are there look better — and makes it easier for you to keep things tidy.

Summary — the checklist in a nutshell

When putting together your baby's first room, start with the foundations: a certified cot with a good mattress, a dresser with a changing table at a height that suits you, a roomy wardrobe and a comfortable chair with a night light. Then take care of the floor — a soft floor mattress and a pouf will create a safe development corner that will serve for years. Finally, add the soul: letter cushions spelling your baby's name and a soft star, which will turn a functional interior into a place with character and a first childhood keepsake.

You don't have to buy everything at once — the most beautiful children's rooms come together gradually, through considered decisions. You'll find all the soft pieces from this list at bettyshome.com — hand-sewn in Poland, from certified fabrics, ready to become part of your story.
